Product Details
Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It exists as three isomers—ortho, meta, and para—namely ortho‑xylene (also known as 1,2‑dimethylbenzene), meta‑xylene (also known as 1,3‑dimethylbenzene), and para‑xylene (also known as 1,4‑dimethylbenzene). Under normal conditions, all are colorless, flammable liquids. Ortho‑xylene has a melting point of −25.2 °C, a boiling point of 144.2 °C, and a density of 0.879 g/mL; meta‑xylene has a melting point of −47.9 °C, a boiling point of 139.1 °C, and a density of 0.868 g/mL; para‑xylene has a melting point of 13.2 °C, a boiling point of 138.3 °C, and a density of 0.868 g/mL. All are insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and benzene. In addition, meta‑ and para‑xylene are readily soluble in chloroform, while ortho‑xylene is soluble in petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride. Catalytic oxidation of para‑, meta‑, and ortho‑xylene yields, respectively, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and phthalic anhydride; nitration followed by reduction of meta‑xylene produces 4,6‑dimethyl‑1,3‑phenylenediamine.
