Product Details
Trichloromethane, also known as chloroform, is an organic compound that appears as a colorless, transparent liquid with a distinctive odor and a sweet taste. It has a high refractive index, is non‑flammable, denser than water, and highly volatile. It is formed when three hydrogen atoms in a methane molecule are replaced by chlorine atoms. Trichloromethane is sensitive to light; upon exposure, it reacts with atmospheric oxygen, gradually decomposing to produce the highly toxic phosgene (carbonyl chloride) and hydrogen chloride. To stabilize it during storage, 1%–2% ethanol may be added. It is miscible with ethanol, benzene, diethyl ether, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, and various oils. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, this compound finds widespread applications in industries, medicine, and other fields.
