Product Details
Benzoic acid is an aromatic organic compound and the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. Originally isolated from benzoin resin, it is also known as benzoin acid and exhibits a faint odor reminiscent of benzaldehyde or benzoin. At room temperature (around 25°C), its pKa is 4.2, classifying it as a monoprotic weak acid; however, its acidity is stronger than that of fatty acids. Benzoic acid possesses a stable chemical structure and is resistant to oxidation. Its melting point is 122.13°C, its boiling point is 249.2°C, and its relative density (at 15/4°C) is 1.2659. It appears as white needle‑like or flaky crystals and sublimes above 100°C. It is slightly soluble in cold water and hexane, but readily dissolves in hot water, ethanol, diethyl ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon disulfide, and turpentine, among other solvents.
