Product Details
Methanol, also known as hydroxymethane, wood alcohol, or wood spirits, is an organic compound. It has a molecular weight of 32.04 and a boiling point of 64.7°C. The names “wood alcohol” and “wood spirits” originate from the fact that, in the past, methanol was primarily produced by extracting it from wood vinegar—a byproduct of the dry distillation or pyrolysis of wood. Today, methanol is manufactured industrially through a catalytic process involving carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Methanol is lightweight, highly volatile, colorless, flammable, and possesses an odor very similar to ethanol (drinking alcohol). However, unlike ethanol, methanol is highly toxic and not intended for consumption. It is commonly used as a solvent, antifreeze, fuel, or denaturant for ethanol, and can also be employed in the transesterification process to produce biodiesel.
