Product Details
Phenol is an organic compound, a colorless, needle‑shaped crystal with a distinctive odor; it is toxic and serves as a raw material in the production of certain resins, disinfectants, preservatives, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used for disinfecting surgical instruments and treating excreta, as well as for skin antiseptic purposes, relieving itching, and managing otitis media. Its melting point is 43°C; at room temperature, it is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents. When heated above 65°C, it becomes completely miscible with water in all proportions. Phenol is corrosive; contact causes local protein denaturation, and solutions that get on the skin can be washed off with alcohol. A small fraction of phenol exposed to air is oxidized by oxygen to quinone, turning pink. It turns purple upon reaction with ferric ions, a property commonly exploited for its detection.
